Among the palette of Dutch masters unfolds the story of Arent de Gelder, a remarkable artist who left his mark in the midst of the Dutch Golden Age. Born on October 26, 1645 in Dordrecht, where he also made his last gasp in August 1727, Gelder was an actor deeply immersed in the rich culture of his homeland.
The son of Joan Aertsz "Jan" de Gelder, a man who spent his days in the service of the West India Company, and Maria Lotterus, Arent was born into a world of business and entrepreneurship. But he chose to follow his own path - a path marked by paints, brushes and canvases. In his childhood, he spent six years, from 1656 to 1662, apprenticing at Samuel van Hoogstraten before taking the decisive step of moving to Amsterdam. There he had the privilege of working under the mastery of Rembrandt, one of the greatest painters the Netherlands has ever produced. A student of Rembrandt, Gelder was among the last to be trained by this master. From him he learned to paint historical pictures and portraits in the unmistakable manner of his master. One of his earliest works, a painting entitled "Ecce Homo" dated 1671, reflects the profound influences Rembrandt had on his artistic development. However, painting was not the only one of his talents.
Arent de Gelder's artwork lives on in our art prints, exuding the same elegance and richness found in his original paintings. His ability to tell a story and capture it on canvas comes alive in each of our art prints. We are honored to preserve the legacy of this remarkable artist and bring his works to a new audience. Our high quality art prints pay homage to the skills and talent of Arent de Gelder and serve to continue telling his great story and legacy.
