Der russische Künstler Aleksandr Yakovlevich Golovin war der kreative Kopf hinter vielen Theater-, Ballett- und Opernproduktionen seiner Heimat und war darüber hinaus ebenfalls als talentierter Maler bekannt. Der im Jahre 1863 geborene Golovin arbeitete neben seiner Tätigkeit als Maler, Zeichner und Illustrator mit hochkarätigen russischen Regisseuren und Dramaturgen zusammen. Er entwickelte für ihre Theaterstücke nicht nur imposante Bühnenbilder, sondern wurde auch gerne als Kostümdesigner engagiert. Unter anderem entwickelte Golovin seine innovativen Ideen und Konzepte für Produktionen von Sergei Diaghilev, Constantin Stanislavski und Vsevolod Meyerhold. Außerdem lieferte er das Bühnenbild für die Originalproduktion von Strawinskys Ballett "Der Feuervogel" aus dem Jahr 1910. Für Pierre Beaumarchais´ Inszenierung des berühmten Stückes "Die Hochzeit des Figaro" im Moskauer Kunsttheater war Golovin auch als Bühnen- und Kostümbildner tätig.
Golovin wurde in der Großstadt Moskau geboren. Als junger Mann studierte er zunächst Architektur. Nach reifer Überlegung wechselte er später zum freieren Studium der Malerei. Er erhielt sowohl in seiner Heimatstadt als auch in Paris Unterricht. Nach seinem Abschluss musste der Jungkünstler seinen Lebensunterhalt als Handwerker und Dekorateur verdienen. Dadurch inspiriert, probierte der kreative Golovin neue künstlerische Bereiche aus, beispielsweise das Designen von Möbeln. Auf der Pariser Weltausstellung im Jahr 1900 war er maßgeblich für die Gestaltung des russischen Pavillons verantwortlich. Er wurde mit Lob überschüttet und erhielt hervorragende Kritiken. Ein Jahr später zog Golovin von Moskau in die Region Sankt Petersburg. Hier startete er seine Karriere als Bühnenbildner für Theater- und Opernstücke. Er vermochte es auf die angesagte Bewegung der Symbolisten auf hochmoderne Weise zu reagieren und beides in seinen Arbeiten zu vereinen. Seine Kostümskizzen sprühen vor Fantasie. Nach der russischen Revolution von 1917 geriet der Star der Theaterszene in finanzielle Schwierigkeiten, da es immer seltener Aufführungen im Theater gab und ihn niemand engagieren konnte. Daher beschloss der mittlerweile 53-Jährige sich näher mit der Malerei zu beschäftigen, die er für das Arbeiten am Theater aufgegeben hatte. Mit grafischen Illustrationen konnte er sich ein neues Standbein sichern, welches ihm wirtschaftlich zugutekam.
Golovin gilt bis heute als einer der wichtigsten und einflussreichsten Bühnenbildern der ehemaligen russischen Föderation. Der vielfältige Künstler beeinflusste Generationen von internationalen Kreativen und Kulturschaffenden. Er starb am 17. April 1930 im Alter von 67 Jahren in der Stadt Detskoye Selo.
