Once upon a time Geertgen tot Sint Jans, a radiant personality of art, who shone his light on us in the high Middle Ages. Known by numerous names such as Geertgen van Haarlem, Gerrit van Haarlem or Gheertgen, he gave us a glimpse into the mysteries of early Dutch painting. His works, animated by the grace and intensity of the Holy Roman Empire, managed to survive the times in a unique way. Born around 1465, possibly in Leiden, a flourishing center of the Burgundian Netherlands, his path led him to Haarlem. There he was taught by Albert van Ouwater, one of the pioneers of oil painting in the northern Netherlands. Geertgen inserted himself as a lay brother in the House of St. John and honors their order with his name - a powerful sign of belonging. An exceptional example of his work is an altarpiece he painted for the House of St. John, which remains in Haarlem to this day.
Deeply embedded in the historical context of his life and work, Haarlem was a thriving metropolis in Geertgen's time. As the second largest city in historic Holland after Dordrecht and ahead of cities like Amsterdam and Rotterdam, it was an important hub for art and commerce. It was precisely that vibrant atmosphere that inspired Geertgen to create unique works that we can admire today in fine art print form. Geertgen's unique skill is clearly reflected in his painting "Nocturnal Birth of Christ". The depiction of the infant Jesus as a source of light in this nocturnal scene was a novelty, an enchanting yet innovative approach that underscores the spiritual significance of the work. This painting stands to this day as a testament to his masterful artistry and his unparalleled influence on the world of art.
The tragedy of his early death around the year 1495 in Haarlem could not dim the radiance of his art. Geertgen left behind an artistic legacy that has been admired by generations of artists and is preserved to this day. We too have felt deeply indebted to him and with our art prints we try to carry on his legacy at a high level. Geertgen's works are now scattered all over the world, from Amsterdam to Vienna, from London to Paris, but through our work we have the opportunity to reunite his art in the homes and hearts of art lovers. Each of our art prints tells the fascinating story of Geertgen tot Sint Jans, a master of early Dutch painting who continues to inspire us with his art.
