"That Giovanni Bellini, I mentioned it, disguised himself as a nobleman or as a senator, Venetian senator, and then sneaked up to Antonello da Messina and spied out the secret of oil painting". This story has been handed down in this way and has also been reported by art historians. At least Bellini was inspired to do so, in order to change his technique.
Bellini was a talented painter and set the colours like no other. Since he had always painted with tempera colours, he then tried painting with oil colours. The result can be seen in his paintings. Oil painting enabled him to work out the pictures in a more differentiated way. Among his main works is the triptych "Throning Madonna with the four Evangelists" (1488).
Giovanni Bellini was probably born on 01.01.1430 in Venice. The exact date of birth is not known. He learned from his father Jacopo, who also worked as a painter. Later he ran his own workshop, in which famous painters worked alongside his brother Gentile. These included Giorgione and Titian, who soon surpassed him in their work. Well-known paintings are the "Madonna and Child" (1504) and "Sacra Conversazione" (1505). He died there on 29.11.1516.
