In his most famous painting, Henri Paul Motte describes the story of Vercingetorix, one of the most famous warriors of the Gauls. In a dramatic scene he shows how Vercingetorix capitulates to Caesar. The victor demands the submission of the Gauls by force. Vercingetorix at first refuses, but eventually he gives in. Another famous painting is titled "Richelieu on the sea wall in La Rochelle".

Henri Paul Motte married his wife Constance Sarah Ivatts, who was from England, in 1882 and had nine children (four sons and 5 daughters) with her.
