Henry Marriott Paget, HMP for short, was born in 1857 and is still considered one of the most famous artists of 19th and 20th century England. He gained fame among other things as a so-called "war illustrator" for the magazine The Sphere. In the course of this activity Henry Marriott Paget was, among other things, engaged in the Balkan War of 1912/13. There HMP collected impressions for his later artistic work. HM Paget, as he also called himself, was not only an illustrator but also a gifted painter!
His paintings are influenced by Symbolism and Art Nouveau. From 1874 the artist was a member of the London Royal Academy of Arts, the most important artists' institution in England. His works were exhibited there between 1879 and 1894. One of his most famous works is Perkin Warbeck in the pillory. Therewith, the painter worked up a piece of English history. Perkin Warbeck lived in the 15th century and gave himself up as son of Edward IV, for which he was executed in 1499. Another motif of HMP's works was Greece. Greek soldiers set off for Crete and Greek Retreat from Domokos are also among the well-known works of the painter Henry Marriott Paget.
