In 1568 Jan Brueghel the Elder was born into an artist dynasty. The Flemish painter is not only son Pieter Brueghel des Älteren. He himself also went down in the history books as an artist.
He did not learn his craft from his father and also on various journeys through Italy. Today, the artist's works are exhibited in the Alte Pinakothek in Munich, the world-famous Louvre or the Pinacoteca Ambrosiana Milano, among others. The works of Jan Brueghel the Elder are influenced by landscape, nature and flowers, among other things. This earned the Dutchman the nickname Blumenbrueghel.
One of Jan Brueghel's most famous works is Die Schlacht bei Issos. Peter Paul Rubens was one of the painter's friends and companions. Together with him, Jan Brueghel the Elder created several works. These include The Five Senses and The Four Elements. Brueghel was fascinated by very specific colours. Whether on canvas or even on copper: the artist painted on various materials with oil paints. Another of Jan Brueghel's most famous paintings was Landstraße mit Bauernwagen und Kühen. This was exhibited in the late 1970s in Friedenstein Castle in Gotha. Since a spectacular art theft in 1979, however, it has been missing.
