Louis Le Breton

    15 January 1818   -   30 August 1866
Expressionism

rnComing from a family of doctors, Le Breton initially studied medicine at the college in Quimper in north-west France. On 1 March 1836, he entered the medical faculty of the navy in Brest and graduated there on 8 June 1837 as a naval surgeon 3rd class.rnrnLe Breton was subsequently appointed by Jules Dumont d'Urville, a distant cousin of his father, as assistant surgeon on his ship, the L'Astrolabe, for the latter's planned circumnavigation of the globe.rnHowever, his talent as a draughtsman and his knowledge of Oceania and Antarctica were highly valued in illustrated magazines after his return, such as Magasin Pittoresque in 1841 and L'Illustration from 1843. Here he initially processed his travel memories in coloured and monochrome lithographs and then expanded his work to include landscape paintings and exotic scenes. Ultimately, he produced illustrations for all maritime news, such as nautical inventions, new ships, disasters at sea and armed naval operations. He also produced posters, including advertising posters.rnrn
