Tilly Willis

   •   Contemporary Arts

The African continent shines with beauty. Breathtaking landscapes, a sheer endless biodiversity and home to many different cultures. Artist Tilly Willis has turned her focus to the many facets of the continent. This deep passion for Africa was sparked during a trip to Kenya. The artist was in her twenties when she set off for the country, which until then had been foreign to her. What she saw there immediately captivated Tilly and awakened a desire to learn about the culture and the way of life of the people. Tilly became acquainted with a world that was completely different from the life of her native Britain. This first trip was the beginning of an intense period of discovery. Tilly Willis began traveling to countries whose landscape and culture she wanted to experience. Her paths led to Yemen, Russia and Madagascar. Again and again, the painter sought out destinations in Africa. Tilly filled diaries, collected sketches and translated her impressions directly on site into paintings.

Tilly Willis grew up in a creative and artistic family in Sommerset, England. Her grandfather was a cartoonist, her father was a painter and sculptor, and her older sister planned a career as a painter. Tilly's environment was influenced by art and so she took an advanced course in fine arts in Sommerset and subsequently studied in London. The painter graduated from the independent art school Byam Shaw. The artist still has a studio in her home town of Sommerset. The beautiful surrounding landscapes provide her with constant inspiration. On sunny days bathed in light, she moves outside with her easel. In her own garden and in nature she tries to capture the ever-changing colours and the unique light. In addition to landscape subjects, Tilly enjoys painting still lifes. She loves to compose scenes from objects. In doing so, the artist often juxtaposes things that would otherwise not come together. Tilly wants to tell humorous stories with her arrangements.

Versatility is a characteristic feature of Tilly Willis' work. In addition to stylized African paintings, her repertoire includes light-filled landscapes and characterful portraits. Painting portraits has accompanied Tilly since the development of her artistic interest. Regularly portraying herself and her daughters, Tilly has created a unique family album. Tilly Willis works quickly when she does portraits. The speed helps her capture the essence and likeness of her model and transfer it to the canvas. Her biography shows how great the artist's love for painting is. It seems Tilly's life is defined by the positive moments. Clients who want to capture their favorite place, she visits and captures the beauty of the place.
