Abstract Forms

Abstract forms - this includes the targeted composition of geometric shapes, but also of colors, lines and contrasts, which does not serve the representational representation. Unlike the object-related art, which was predominant until the beginning of the 20th century, abstract art is about deliberately not to evoke any association with familiar forms, objects or creatures.

The Russian painter Wassily Kandinsky is one of the most important representatives and co-founders of abstract painting. Around the year 1910, this new art form emerged and spread rapidly in various independent movements in Europe. In addition to Kandinsky, the most important artists of the time included the Dutch artist Piet Mondrian, the Frenchman Robert Delaunay and the Hungarian László Moholy-Nagy. German artist Paul Klee, who was a friend of Kandinsky, also created numerous works of art that fall into this category.

Then, as now, abstract painting was hotly contested even among artists and art historians. One widely held position was that only those works that required some skill, creative or manual ability could be called art. In 1957, at an art exhibition in London, pictures were exhibited that had been painted by a monkey. The fact that the works painted by humans were indistinguishable from those of the monkey provoked heated debate. And yet abstract forms have their own special appeal. They are open to interpretation and thus generate unique associations in viewers. Last but not least, the artworks speak for the time in which they were created. The need to tell completely new stories, to express oneself in a new way, was clearly influenced by modernism, but also by the world wars and the post-war period. Thus, the similarly scandalous atonal music of Arnold Schoenberg was created around the same time.
