Flowers

Whether in a vase, in a garden bed, or wildflowers in a summer meadow: Flower paintings are among the great themes in art. The beauty of leaves and blossoms, the variety of colors and the contrasts also invite the viewer again and again to discover the uniqueness of nature in their own four walls. Vincent van Gogh's "Sunflowers" is one of the classics. The oil painting of the expressionist artist convinces with its immediate colorfulness and the diversity of the partly blooming, partly already withered flowers.

Piet Mondrian, known for his rather sober, mathematical color surfaces, proves with "Chrysanthemum" from 1907 that he is also a master of delicate beauty. Mondrian focuses on a light blue blossom that expresses its beauty through fragile-looking delicacy. In contrast, the "Flower Vase" by the Flemish Jesuit painter Daniel Seghers delights with opulent splendor. Large and small calyxes complement each other to create a harmonious work of art, with the elegant glass vase also playing an essential role.

Expressionist Ernst Ludwig Kirchner likewise relies on the coexistence and juxtaposition of rich colors in his painting "Flowers". At the same time, Kirchner's painting is also overwhelmed by its unusual perspective, which allows the viewer to look at the flower heads obliquely from above.
Flowers are also often shown in context. Claude Monet's "water lily paintings" are legendary. The artist conjured up this subject in many variations on canvas. The lightly moving water surface oscillating in numerous colors contrasts masterfully with the delicate flowers floating gently on the water and their powerful green leaves.

Aristide Maillol, Santiago Rusiñol and Pierre Auguste Renoir take the flower lover into the garden: colourful splashes of colour and elaborate blossoms bear witness to magnificent diversity in nature.
