Navy

Marine painting is a genre of art that focuses on nautical themes. Navy and ships of their time, ports, coasts or the open sea are the subject of this art genre. The experience of nature includes not only the calm sea but also stormy scenes in which waves and wind tear ships apart.

The origins of marine painting lie in the 17th century in the Netherlands. So it should come as no surprise that the interest in marine painting coincided with the rise of the Netherlands as a maritime world power. Certainly, depictions of ships were nothing new in art. Most of them were mythological or religious scenes. However, it was not until this period that this genre of art developed into an independent theme in the Netherlands, although it is not always easy to distinguish it from other genres. Many paintings, for example, can be classified as landscape painting, while others, particularly those depicting naval battles or other historical events, belong to history painting. Religious and mythological scenes did not disappear either, but completed the wide range of subjects. At the end of the 17th century, it came to the heyday by the two Van de Veldes, with which marine painting spread outside the Netherlands and continues to this day.

An important representative is Claude Joseph Vernet. The French painter was active in the 18th century and became especially known for his depictions of French ports. In particular, he focused on French military and commercial ports. His paintings give us a historical insight into the shipping of his time. The 19th century Englishman William Turner was influenced by the van den Veldes and subsequently inspired abstract art with his ominous or peaceful, low-contour seascapes. In his works, water and light merged together, while representationalism dissolved.
