Portraits

Portrait painting has always been considered a special art of capturing the lifestyle and social atmosphere of its time. Throughout the centuries and all painting styles, wonderful works of art have been created in likenesses of famous and equally unknown characters, conveying a quiet understanding of the lifestyle and attitude to life of their time.

This art form has been known since antiquity and after phases of rather rigid portraits of mostly only great rulers until the 14th century, portrait painting blossomed in the times of the High Renaissance and the static-stiff mode of representation now gave way to a natural-realistic and more relaxed interpretation. Since then, the oil technique has dominated this art form, enabling the artists of the various epochs to produce a particularly lifelike character image and a comprehensive depiction of the essence of the person portrayed.
Portrait painting also fulfilled an increasingly important social function from the early 16th century onwards. Portraits of rulers and commemorative portraits were in great demand and were often copied by lesser-known artists. Portrait painting also played an important role in the wedding market of royal and noble houses, and in many cases portrait painters were sent out to produce likenesses of potential marriage candidates.

Even the invention of photography in the mid-19th century could not diminish the importance and popularity of portrait painting for a long time, and even Impressionism, which moved art further and further away from a realistic mode of representation, still left the portrait enough room for new forms of representation. It was not until the increasing professionalization and commercialization of photography at the end of the 19th century and the development of art sliding further into abstraction that the portrait in painting was then rendered meaningless at the end of the 19th century.

Find here with us the highest quality art prints of the most famous and beautiful portraits of all eras from painting and photography.
