Still Life

Still life as an art genre in its own right refers to a decorated or random arrangement of non-moving objects such as fruits, flowers, fish, objects of everyday life, hunting utensils, and more. Typically, still lifes are composed thematically and aesthetically.

Although still lifes probably existed at all times of artistic epochs, the art form did not establish itself as an independent genre until the 17th century. Depicting natural objects and everyday objects in their pristine beauty was the origin of this art form, however, still life also developed into a messenger of coded and often morally tinged statements in the composition and depiction of objects.
In later periods, the decorative character of the still life dominated and with the increasing demand for decorative art and the commercialization of the decorative arts, the still life became a popular and common decorative object in middle-class homes.

The opulent design of so-called splendid still lifes at the end of the 17th and beginning of the 18th century marked the peak of this art form and also the final phase of the baroque still life. At this time, due to the high esteem in which this art form was held, some artists were able to rise to become highly paid court painters who received high recognition for their art. However, also less favored artists it became possible, due to the popularity of this form of representation, through markets, merchants, bookstores and from their studio to build up an often flourishing arts and crafts.

After a waning of enthusiasm for still life during the 18th century, still life experienced renewed attention in the 19th and 20th centuries and was revived by well-known artists of their time, such as Paul Cézanne, Georges Braque, and Max Beckmann. It thus established itself as an enduring art genre in the art Olympus across a wide variety of eras and art styles, and continues to find new forms of representation in ever-changing art movements.
