Art of the 19th century

In the history of art, this long stylistic epoch extends from the end of the Baroque era through Classicism, Romanticism, Biedermeier and Impressionism to the beginning of the First World War. Kings, princes and clergy were stripped of their power during the Enlightenment and civil rights were strengthened. This had consequences not only for economic and technological development, but also on social coexistence as well as the humanities and the understanding of art.

Artists responded to groundbreaking developments with dynamic inventiveness. The painters of this period created their subjective worldview with their works. As traditional patrons initially reacted without understanding, a substitute had to be found on the free art market. In the second half of the 19th century there were studio exhibitions and art galleries.

It was the time of the Impressionists, who were first reviled as "blobs gone wild". World-class French artists such as Edgar Degas ("The Absinthe"), Claude Monet ("Sunrise") and Edouard Manet ("Bar in the Folies Bergère") suffered. The popular Austrian Art Nouveau painter ("The Kiss") is one of the outstanding artists of this outgoing art epoch.

The paintings became more and more individual and there was a split in the understanding of art. Supporters of the academic art movement clashed with open-minded avant-gardists. Eventually, criticism and fierce public debates cleared the way for the artists' subjective ideas.
