Cubism

The term "cubism" goes back to the Latin word "cubus" (cube). It refers to an avant-garde movement at the beginning of the 20th century that used cubes and other geometric shapes as the basis for its artistic representations. The main representatives were Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque. Paul Cézanne is to be seen as a forerunner and idea giver of the revolutionary movement. From him the statement is handed down that the material and perceptible reality can be reduced to "sphere, cone and cylinder".

Georges Braque was influenced by this. In view of his Cubist landscape paintings created at L'Estaque between 1907 and 1908, this is obvious. The end of 1908 also saw the beginning of an intensive collaboration between Braque and Picasso, whose 1907 painting "Les Demoiselles d'Avignon" can be described as programmatic for the movement. The five women are drawn with very hard lines. Angular shapes and the shade of ochre dominate the scene. Picasso, for his part, was influenced by African sculpture and by the Fauvist Henri Matisse. Matisse was already experimenting radically with color at the turn of the century, trying to find a new formal language.

Another important representative of Cubism was Juan Gris. Cubism replaced Fauvism and influenced not only Futurism, Dadaism and Surrealism, but the entire art of the 20th century.
