Biedermeier  ·  Famous Masterpieces

This probably most famous painting of the Biedermeier is unusually socially critical for the otherwise bourgeois, contrarevolutionary influenced, often even as a reactionary verschriene style, it shows the depressing fate of an unsuccessful writer. Nevertheless, the picture is not of a progressive nature and therefore can not be attributed to the Vormärz. Like many of Spitzweg's works, certain romantic tendencies cling to the picture. In short, the painting is difficult to grasp from an art-historical point of view. The fate of the unsuccessful artist, however, is one that hovers over every cultural creator like the Sword of Damocles. Spitzweg himself sold about 400 paintings of his 1,500 works during his lifetime, but remained largely free to produce "bread-free art".

The Poor Poet by Carl Spitzweg. Available as an art print on canvas, photo paper, watercolor board, uncoated paper or Japanese paper.
