Romanticism  ·  Navy

The painting "On the Sailor" by Caspar David Friedrich (1777-1840) is a brilliant sentiment of Romanticism. It shows in back view a couple sitting at the bow on a sailboat, holding their hands in trust, looking towards the port city which lies in the distance. The picture immediately captivates the observer through the stylistic elements chosen by the painter. First, it is the proportions of the persons and the sailing ship. The people look almost graceful compared to the wooden mast, which stands solid and inclined in the middle in the front image plane.

It seems as if the viewer himself is on board, as the mast is within reach. Then the oblique position of the mast in the foreground and the two sails that are fully in the wind give us a good breeze and the boat has full speed. We almost take part in the swaying and drifting of the ship, because the arrow-shaped upward bow directly in the center of the picture enhances this effect. The speed of the ship is also conveyed by the taut ropes and tight folds at the bottom of the canvas. And then these two persons are intimately and intimately looking into this unreal distance.

The concentrated view of the city in the distance creates a pull and expresses a strong longing for what the two persons will expect. The picture is like a glimpse into the future. In the spherical haze of the evening light appear church towers and buildings of a city, which is not immediately interpretable. Is it a port city like Greifswald or Stralsund, motifs that the artist has often used in his other paintings? The two persons, the man on the left and the woman on the right, are elegantly dressed. The man wears a dark blue suit and beret in the old German way. The woman is dressed in a long red dress with white lace collar. What will she expect in the new city? Caspar David Friedrich creates a harmonious composition with a romantic attitude and a view of what is to come with this captivating picture, which seems like a cutout.
