The French Baroque painter Claude Lorrain is famous for his lyrical landscapes. Born in Lorraine in 1600, the artist worked for many years in Rome and spent five years in Naples painting veduta. "Pastoral Landscape" bears witness to Lorrain's craftsmanship. You can see a wooded river landscape with rocks. In the background, the action widens towards the mountains, here the water lies in glistening sunlight. Only implied, but insistent, a castle towers right on a rock. With her battlements, she seems to make contact with the mighty clouds above her. The painting receives dynamism from people and animals in the lower third of the image, who are closer to the viewer. Two figures drive a herd through the river, others camp on a rock. The painter plays with light and shadow as well as with the colors of the garments: green, red and especially blue correspond harmoniously with nature and sky.
