Claude Monet (1840 - 1926), the painter of luminous landscapes and of light, created a painting with "Poppy field", which was to become one of his most popular. Of course, this was unthinkable when he showed it in 1874 at the first exhibition of the so-called Impressionists. Nadar, the photographer, writer and patron of the arts, had provided Monet and associates such as Edgar Degas with his former studio. "Poppy field" originated in Argenteuil, where Monet lived for several years. The eponymous poppy coins large parts of the picture with its dabbed, typically red flowers. Like waterfalls, the flowers, swaying slightly in the summer breeze, pour over the left side of the hill. The contours of the trees and bushes, which form the strong, continuous background line, appear slightly dissolved. The casually holding a parasol in the front of the front should be Monet's first wife Camille, next to the son Jean.
