Although there is no rider in the picture and in fact the horse is blue, this painting is associated with the expressionist artist group Blauer Reiter like no other and is almost a figurehead. Franz Marc, who founded the group with Wassily Kandinsky in 1911, was known to paint animals not in their appearance color, but rather to work out their essence in color. This abstraction of motifs began to be introduced in 1911 in Marc's work. That essence was always blue in the horses painted by Marc as a symbol of spirituality and the yearning for the liberation of the earthly, material world. In return, he painted about a bull red, a cow yellow or a fox purple.
