"Bathers or two naked women" by Gustave Courbet from 1858 is a sensual erotic depiction of two women, some of them completely naked, some slightly bared. Courbet is one of the most famous representatives and pioneers of realism and is known for his sensual body images, which always offer a subliminal, but mostly quite obvious erotic. "Bathers or two naked women" is no exception. In delicate shades, the painter presents two ladies, who have made themselves comfortable on a lake in the middle of a forest. One of the two women is lying in the foreground with a slightly raised torso on a white blanket, while the other woman is sitting in the background looking at her nakedness. The lady in the background is slightly veiled in contrast to the lady in the foreground. Only her breast is bared. The front lady looks heavenward and points with her hand to the right side of the picture. In addition, flowers are in the foreground, the ladies seem to have picked previously. The hair of the front lady is loosened, while that of the rear lady is tied and pinned up. In this way, it seems as if the front female figure had exposed only for the rear lady to show her her body - and thus the image viewer.
The female figures are held in bright shades, as well as the fabric on which the front lady rests, and the fabric that covers the rear lady. The background is designed in darker shades of green to direct the view of the two female figures. Courbet's nudes are always scandalous and marked by a directness that was only found in realism at the time. "Bathers or two naked women" is no exception, as the two women are - though more or less subtle - portrayed as lovers, as their posture and looks refer. Today, the painting is exhibited at the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Nantes, France. female · reclining · relaxing · bather · flowers · pearl necklace · lesbian · lesbians · sapphic · red hair · Musee des Beaux-Arts, Nantes, France / Bridgeman Images
