With the idealized portrayal of Napoleon in his portrait Napoleon crossed the Alps on May 20, 1800, the French historical painter Jacques-Louis David represented the then consul of France shortly before his victory against the Austrians in the Second Coalition War (1799-1802) A ruler on horseback is based on a long tradition dating back to ancient imperial Rome. A special element is that Napoleon is not presented with classic elements of a commander, such as a sword in his hand. The other lack of military aspects in this picture also serves the purpose of portraying Napoleon as a sovereign thinker and strategist who wins his victories with the spirit and not the weapon. This probably best-known depiction of Napoleon was created by David in five different versions, with the one shown here currently in the Palace of Versailles. Whether it was the client to Napoleon himself, however, is controversial.
