This picture by Jan Vermeer (1632-1675) has provoked a wealth of interpretations. Not only the shimmering pearls on the scales and on the table, in front of which the pregnant woman stands calmly, testify to prosperity and even wealth, also the fur-studded jacket of the pregnant women point in this direction. In the background is a depiction of the Last Judgment hanging on the wall - as a warning not to indulge in secular splendor and lose the salvation for it? The serene expression and the rather contemplative posture of the woman, however, provide no evidence in this direction. The balance is in balance, a symbol of balance? The lighting conditions are also balanced. The small window in the upper left corner of the picture hardly lets in any external light, yet the painting does not look gloomy: the white fur trim shines as bright as the pearls. Vermeer's fascinating art can not be fathomed in the end.
