The French painter Jean-Joseph-Xavier Bidauld first dealt with painting through his brother before he decided to become a landscape painter himself. The artist, who was born in 1758, lived in Rome for five years, from where he traveled to other regions of Italy. "View of the bridge and the city of Cava, Kingdom of Naples" shows a moody, lush green landscape that is bathed in mild evening light. Majestically, in the rear part of the picture, a rocky mountain dominates the scene, framed by lower mountains that are wooded. The title of the city "Cava" can only be seen at a second glance with a few buildings on the right and shady houses. In contrast, in the front part of the picture the dark bridge, which reminds of an aqueduct, immediately catches the eye. The painter concentrates on a few colors in this artwork, whereby green is used in all varieties, also by the masterfully staged light.
