In 1849, the artist Joseph Noel Parton painted "The Strife of Oberon and Titania", a scene from the play "A Midsummer Night's Dream" by William Shakespeare. One can see the fairy queen Titania and the fairy king Oberon arguing at nightfall. Oberon was considered the king of fairies in the literature of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. In their woodland house outside Athens they are surrounded by a group of fairies. According to Lewis Carroll, author of Alice in Wonderland, there are 165 fairies in the picture. The reason for the altercation is the changeling boy hiding behind Titania. The painting is unique in its many details with all the fairies and all the individual scenes it unites. Even as a complete work, it has impressive dynamics and beautiful colors.
