The Dutch painter Lawrence Alma-Tadema was already during his lifetime (1836 to 1912) a highly decorated artist and member of various academies. His ability to depict ancient and mythological scenes in detail is also shown in the work "The Roses of Heliogabalus". Known as Elagabalus, the Roman emperor was known for his dissolute lifestyle. Therefore, Alma-Tadema also lavishly organizes the Roman feast. At first sight you can see rose petals everywhere: on the ground, flying through the air, floating like a garland from the pillar over the heads of the Emperor and his guests. Pinks and reds, as well as the delicate blue sky, convey a fragrance that is further underpinned by the women covered in flowers on the ground. Here a two-part event takes place: On a marble floor the celebrating rulers are stored in the upper half of the picture. They drink and enjoy the spectacle at their feet.
