The image "Breakfast outdoors" by Pál Szinyei Merse shows a group of people sitting on a hill. Szinyei first painted the landscape from his memory in his studio. The individual figures he designed sequentially with models. The man lying on a blanket eating a chicken thigh is the painter himself. But at first there was no positive reaction to the picture and his fellow artists did not appreciate it. Szinyei wanted to give it to the Hungarian National Museum, but this was rejected. Therefore, the artist retired from 1882, even stopped painting at times. In 1905, friends persuaded him to exhibit his work again in Budapest, where it was stormily celebrated. In the following years he received numerous awards and distinctions. As a result, he developed his own style independently of other Impressionist painters, which also characterizes his main work: he combines the colors of the paintings with harmonic complementary colors and skilfully uses lighting effects.
