The motif of the old woman with brazier touches the Mediterranean myths of Vesta and Hestia, which provide and protect the important hearth fire. In the myths, it is young girls or virgins who do this sacred service to the community. Rubens seems to take a look at the deepest roots of these customs. The old woman carries the warming and protective knowledge, the hot coals, the fire for the hearth in a brazier. So that she can help out the neighbors, should the hearth fire be extinguished once. The young girl in the picture stirs the fire and blows it. The man looks lost in thought in the sparks. The whole community gathers in the cave around the glowing embers. Peter Paus Rubens shows here impressively with his baroque painting style how the flame of life is carried on.
