The struggle of two brothers (mostly twins) has always been a popular motif in mythology, religion, literature and art: Osiris and Seth, Romulus and Remus, Jacob and Esau or to cite a more modern example Jacob and The Man in Black. But no Bruderzwist is probably as famous as the one between Cain and Abel. The first two sons of Adam and Eve both vied for God's favor and offered sacrifices to him. Cain, the peasant, sacrificed part of his harvest, whereas Abel the shepherd slaughtered a lamb, which, unlike Cain's sacrifice, found God's favor. Envy killed Cain his brother and was banished by God. Unlike the Bible, where Cain leads Abel out into the field, Rubens shows the fratricide on the sacrificial altar, the stumbling block.
