The Tower of Babel and the ensuing Babylonian confusion of words form one of the most famous passages in the Old Testament, although it contains only a few verses. However, Bruegel's painting was not based on the real ziggurat of Ur, that is, the ancient Babylon ("god's gate"), which was rediscovered in 1913, but on the Colosseum in Rome, which is modeled on the individual levels of the tower. He also moves the events from the Middle East to the North Sea coast and lets the builder King Nimrod, who dressed in the painting as a European prince of the 16th century, build the tower in a polder landscape, as they are in the Netherlands, Belgium or Northern Germany finds. Outstanding is above all the incredible detail of the image, which reveals an ever new facet of the painting.
