The Viennese Josef von Alt takes the viewer by his painting to the Altaussee, which is dominated by the huge ridge Trissel. The painter designs a living spectacle of nature in which even women dressed in dirndl play a small role. Jewelery sets off her blue aprons from the rest of the clothing and corresponds with the bright blue of the summer sky. Along the edge of the forest, in the right part of the picture, a train of women is moving, carrying something on their heads. It is probably laundry that should be washed in clear water. The dominating subject, however, is nature: the bare rock, clouds and blue sky, the water surface in which the events are reflected. Powerful shadows on the right side of the screen give the scene just as much dynamism as the slim fir trees towering high on the left: a painting that impresses with its powerful palette and detail capabilities.
