Hard to fathom is the look of the young woman in the picture of Rembrandt's pupil Willem Drost (1633-1659). She seems to be lost in herself, her gaze inward. At the same time, she does not seem brooding, but quite content with herself and the world. Dark shades dominate the picture - except for the almost bright-white skin of the young woman, which are highlighted due to the dark background as well as their clothing. The attention of the viewer, mediated by this pronounced light-dark contrast, initially directed to the rather plump face of the woman. The painterly design of the face reveals the whole mastery of the artist as a pupil who was almost equal to his teacher Rembrandt. Particularly noteworthy is the subtle light direction, in the best tradition of Rembrandt. The light falls on the face from above, giving the nose and chin a subtle shadow.
