The painting "The Birth of Venus" by William Adolphe Bouguereau belongs to the flow of realism. The figures, centered on Venus, the goddess of love, are depicted in a photo-realistic manner. The complementary colors give the picture depth and make it more lively. Sky and water come in a variety of shades of blue, while the hair of the female figures and angels and the skin of the figures in fine gold and yellow tones change. The hairstyle of the men and the dolphin are held in a deep blue-black. Bouguereau mainly drew nudes based on classical and antique models, of which "The Birth of Venus" is regarded as the most important painting of the French painter. The scene looks erotic; since he used for the nude representation of a classic scene, his presentation was considered morally unacceptable. The Aphrodite of Kyrene, which can be found today in the Thermenmuseum in Rome, served as a direct model for this painting. He made his Venus even more erotic with sprawling hips and a sensual arm and head posture. Bouguereau is known for his photo-realistic painting technique and is one of the most gifted representatives of realism in France. The painting dates back to 1879. His paintings always have a very lively effect, because he amplifies the movements of the body and thus brings more dynamism into his depictions. The various groups of figures - angels in the background, people around Venus and angels with dolphins in the foreground - underline the dynamics of the scene in an impressive way.
