Throughout his life, William Blake distinguished himself through a spirituality opposed to the dogmatic interpretation of Christian doctrine by the churches. Even otherwise, he was ahead of his time, advocating the equality of all people, regardless of their origin or gender. Blake was both a writer and a painter and was inspired by the apocalyptic passages of the Bible to his paintings. So the motif of this picture comes from the twelfth chapter of Revelation: "There appeared a great sign in heaven: a woman clothed in the sun, and the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars. And she was pregnant and screamed in child [...] demands and behold, a big red dragon [...] stepped in front of the woman, [...] so that if she had given birth he would eat her child. "
