Unryu, 55g

The delicate Unryu paper is still made today according to a recipe rooted in a deep tradition. Fibers extracted from the bast layer of the mulberry tree are processed with crystal-clear mountain water into a fine pulp. After this pulp is cooked, the coveted paper is produced through careful scooping. The long fibers of the mulberry enable the production of this ultra-thin yet impressively durable and tear-resistant paper. The structure of its natural fiber bundles is associated in Japanese culture with dragons gliding through the clouds. Hence its poetic name, Unryu, translated as 'Cloud Dragon.' At a weight of only 55 g/m², this paper can accentuate reduced motifs and subtle color applications in a cloud-like elegance. The shimmering transparency of Unryu offers the perfect stage for light-filled art installations. This paper, light yet robust, similar to Western parchment in its single layer, surpasses it with its incredible tear resistance, ideal for free hangings, whether suspended from the ceiling or floating in space. It is an authentic foundation for artworks initially designed by Japanese masters for scroll presentations. Unryu is ideally suited for works that opt against dense color application. Photographs where the play of light highlights the simplicity of the composition. Paintings that focus on a central motif, as preferred by botanical painters through the ages. Delicate watercolors gain an additional dimension of liveliness through the paper's distinctive structure. Created for Japanese artists, the texture of Unryu beautifully harmonizes with the aesthetics of various art epochs, carrying them into the present. Its characteristic surface texture becomes an integral part of the artistic effect, lending each art print an unparalleled and graceful expressiveness.
