Jean-Auguste Dominique Ingres is born as the first child of an artistically creative father. His father introduced him to art at an early age and offered Jean-August opportunities to try his hand at painting. Ingres uses his father's studio and at the age of ten makes his first portraits and copies old paintings. He also adopted the conservative art style of his father. The logical step out of his childhood was to attend the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Already at the beginning of his activity as a painter Ingres won the renowned Prix de Rome. Unfortunately, he was not able to meet the resulting expectations. Ingres dared to take the step away from pure depiction and towards the processing of his individual impressions in the paintings. The results then often showed perspective and anatomical inaccuracies.
Ingres prefers to produce portraits, historical works and nudes. He painted the portrait of Bonaparte as the first consul for the city of Liege. Napoleon became a regular performer of Ingres' paintings. The artist's love was for historical works, the combination of religion and politics was important to him. His paintings about the life and ultimately the death of Jeanne dArc clearly show this aspect in Ingres' work.
