Pierre Henri de Valenciennes

Pierre Henri de Valenciennes

Pierre-Henri de Valenciennes, born December 6, 1750 and died February 16, 1819, was a French painter and university lecturer best known for his landscape painting. A pioneer of Impressionist open-air painting, he paved the way for important artistic movements such as Romantic mood painting. His works are a shining example of the beauty and artistic potential of landscape painting.

De Valenciennes was born in Toulouse. As a young man he showed a great interest in art and began his training at the Royal Academy of Toulouse. He later continued his studies in Paris with Gabriel Francois Doyen, a member of the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture. During this time, he traveled extensively throughout southern France and Italy, where he was inspired by ancient cultures and breathtaking landscapes. Thanks to the support of his patrons, de Valenciennes was able to live mainly in Rome from 1777 to 1785. There he took the opportunity to study ancient art and Italian landscapes intensively. The sketches and oil studies he made outdoors served as the basis for the paintings he later executed in the studio. This practice was new and revolutionary in his time, and contributed to de Valenciennes being one of the first artists to develop a sensitivity in the depiction of nature and landscapes that had been unfamiliar until then.

When he returned to Paris in 1785, de Valenciennes earned the recognition of his colleagues and was unanimously elected a member of the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture in 1787. There he taught painting and regularly presented his works at the Salon de Paris, the country's most important art exhibition. His teaching methods and commitment to art education helped shape the next generation of artists. In addition to his practical work, de Valenciennes published a textbook on landscape painting in 1799 that became a standard work for an entire generation of painters. In this book, he called for the landscape painter to be a careful observer of nature and to record his observations on location in oil studies. This work illustrates de Valenciennes' innovative and practical approach to art.

Although his contributions to the art world are invaluable, de Valenciennes has not received the recognition he deserves. More recently, however, art scholars have begun to recognize his role as a pioneer of open-air painting and his deep understanding of nature in art. He is considered the "true discoverer of the immediate impression of nature captured on canvas," marking a fundamental shift in the perception and representation of nature in art that continues to this day.

At our company, we value Pierre-Henri de Valenciennes for both his artistic innovation and his profound appreciation of the beauty of nature. His works are a perfect addition to any art collection, whether you are a long-time art lover or a newcomer to the world of art. Our high-quality art prints reproduce de Valenciennes' original works with the utmost care and precision, allowing you to fully appreciate the fine details and exceptional color palette that distinguish his landscapes.
