Impressionism

The term "Impressionism" goes back to the Latin word "impressio" and means "impression, sensation". The concrete eponym of the art movement was the painting "Impression - soleil levant" by Claude Monet. It was shown in 1874 at the first exhibition of the new art movement in Paris. From the title, an art critic derived the name for the entire style in a mocking manner. Nevertheless, artists adopted the term for their movement. Temporally, Impressionism can be located between 1860 and 1920.

The impressionist artists struck a completely new path of pictorial representation. Parallel to the advent of photography, the meticulous depiction of motifs no longer seemed significant. Instead, the emphasis was on conveying atmosphere, subjective impression and lighting conditions. With these emphases, Impressionism became the starting point for modernist painting.

The works of this style show random sections of pictures with the character of spontaneous snapshots. The motifs consist mainly of nature and big city scenes. Painted mostly outdoors, the artists used alla-prima painting instead of classical oil painting. At the same time, the color palette became brighter and more luminous. Colors were placed individually next to each other, giving a unified and vivid impression when viewed from a certain distance.

Starting in France, the style spread throughout Europe. Notable Impressionist artists include Édouard Manet, Auguste Renoir, Edgar Degas, Auguste Rodin, and Camille Pissarro. In Germany, Max Liebermann, Lovis Corinth and Max Slevogt are among the most important representatives of Impressionism.
