Flemish painting

In the transition from the late Gothic period to the early phase of the Renaissance, a regional school of painting developed in the Netherlands that shaped the art movement of Old Netherlandish painting. The European art scene experienced a period of change. With the beginning of the 14th century, the church was no longer the sole patron; increasingly, painters received commissions from royal houses. This change was accompanied by a reflection on Dutch painting and the development of independent styles. The realistic depictions from the Franco-Flemish book painting of Jean Pucelle are considered to be the starting point for the realistic representation of the Flemish group of artists. The development of oil painting and the knowledge of perspective depth effects made portraits works that exhibited a high degree of realism. This realism later carried over to the Flemish painters' depictions of landscape. Close observations of nature, including the human body changed the way people were depicted. Gone are the days of shapeless cloaked figures with flawless complexions. With the help of light reflections, the depictions took on a new plasticity Robert Campin and van Eyck showed people and bodies with all their imperfections. Wrinkles, bags under the eyes and fullness of body were depicted in all ruthlessness. Robert Campin is considered the master of Flemish painting and together with the van Eyck brothers he created art that was no longer the preserve of the church and royalty. The Flemish painters created art for the living rooms of the citizens. Other important representatives were van der Eyden and van der Goes, who passed on the knowledge of Old Netherlandish art in their workshops.
