Genre painting

Genre painting cannot be assigned to any particular epoch. Rather, it runs through the world of painting since ancient times. Under genre painting fall pictures of everyday scenes that depict life at the given time. The figures in the paintings are unknown people, which underlines the contrast to portrait painting, which usually concerns more or less famous people. Examples of genre painting can already be found on ancient vessels, as well as on frescoes from Pompeii. They can be hunting scenes, dances or warlike confrontations between two or more anonymous soldiers. From the Middle Ages onwards, genre painting, also called moral painting, changed from mere depiction to paintings with moral meanings. Thus, peasants are often depicted in scenes that were considered reprehensible at the time: drunk in taverns, in fisticuffs or even in indecent situations with other people. In contrast, genre painting in the bourgeois class developed to show virtues. Diligent sewing girls and women taking care of animals and children can be found just as often as richly dressed gentlemen at elegantly laid tables. Paintings from genre painting are always regarded as cultural-historical evidence of life in different epochs. Progress can be seen on the basis of devices, machines and instruments. The focus is not so much on the individual figures; rather, it is the entire painting that reflects everyday life. With Pieter Bruegel the Elder and Jan Vermeer, as well as Ludwig Knaus and Johann Peter Hasenclever, genre painting has some famous representatives.
