Picturesque landscapes with a bridge as an eye-catcher are a popular subject. The French painter Gustave Caillebotte (1848-1894), however, dispensed with this attractive possibility in his painting "Le Pont de LEurope". The work gains its appeal from the combination of the people depicted on the one hand and the enormous depth effect of their environment on the other hand. However, the foreground of the picture and thus the entrance into its space is formed by a seemingly stray dog, who turns his back on the viewer and virtually runs into the picture. The next moment his right hind leg will touch the ground, neither the pair left nor the man to his right leaning casually on the bridge railing and probably looking at the river take notice of the animal. The depth that the image gains through the bridge construction is further enhanced by the house canyon in the background. And although there is no sign of a lovely landscape, the picture radiates calm.
