Lucas Cranach the Elder was one of the most important German painters of his time. He painted numerous portraits of Martin Luther and thus shaped the image we have of him today. Several times he also painted Martin Luther's wife, Katharina von Boara (later called Katharina Luther, also Lutherin) or double portits of both. In 1525, the reformer married Martin Luther and the former Cistercian Katharina von Bora. The marriage corresponded to Luther's teaching that marriage was not a sacrament and the celibacy of the clergy was to be rejected.
