The two titles of the painting by James Abbott McNeill Whistler (1834-1903) designate the range of what is depicted there. The American painter painted not only his mother, but at the same time an image bordering on the abstract. Gray and black tones dominate the painting as well as rectangles in various forms: on the left a curtain, to the right of it a picture with a black frame and a bright passe-partout, and on the right edge of the picture a cut picture can be seen, also with a black frame. Whistler's mother is shown in a strict side view, almost like a paper cut. Her figure is hardly recognizable under the expansive black and flat-effect dress, only the left hand and the two feet, which stand on a square footstool, give the figure something like depth. The picture appears absolutely coherent in its colourfulness and due to its arrangement and by no means drab. In this ambience, the female figure looks sublime and dignified.
