With "Prayer in the Mosque", Jean Leon Gerome takes the viewer into a huge prayer room. Following the commandments of Academic Realism, the painter shows this mosque as a true-to-life building: in the foreground are three round arches supported by columns, which seem to continue indefinitely into the distance. The stone archways are supplemented above by a red ceiling, which takes in color the stripes of the columns and the magnificent robes of some worshipers.
The artist masterfully understands how to make the vast room appear through its harmonious architecture and the light. But not only the static of the room, which breaks the boundaries of the picture, is huge! The figures and pigeons that populate the room also draw a magical look. Moving slightly to the right from the center of the picture, one's gaze lingers on a Muslim, dressed in a magnificent, floor-length, red robe. He stands on a matching prayer rug, whose yellow outline in turn directs the view of the elaborate stone floor with its mosaics. Behind the praying man are two oriental-dressed men in harem pants, who have raised their hands to prayer. The small gap and the fact that these men do not have a prayer rug suggests that they are servants of the red-clad man. The viewer discovers further prayers on the left and in the background. All are shown sideways and lined up tightly together. Thanks to their upright prayer attitude, these men seem to correspond with the exact standing columns. Further liveliness is brought to the pigeons in the otherwise focused prayer-oriented scene. The pigeons partly flutter under the mosque roof, sometimes they frolic on the ground to pick something. The peaceful coexistence of humans and animals is just as impressive as the dimensions of this mosque and the concentrated attitude of the worshipers. The complexity of the color palette of the robes, the depth and perspective of the room and the illumination of the mosque make this oil painting a masterpiece: the viewer can always discover new details in the visual walk! temple · turbans · carpet · books · prayer · mosque · stripes · arches · columns
