Photography

Lewis Wickes Hine is one of the most important social documentary photographers of the 19th century. In the beginning, he used the power of his photos to expose the injustices that prevailed in the underclass, thereby making a political difference. But in 1919, he broke away from the accused photography and shows with his pictures the positive value of the working man. He called these pictures "work portraits" and published them in the picture book of the same name. He himself says that he wants to lead us into the heart of modern industry, where the personality of the people, through their work, flows into all the industrial masterpieces of which our lives and our happiness depend. "Powerhouse mechanics" is probably one of the most famous pictures from this illustrated book.
