Early Renaissance

The early Renaissance is the beginning of the Renaissance and began around 1420 in Italy, more precisely in Florence, where it ended at the end of the 15th century. Since it lasted almost the entire 15th century, it is referred to in Italian simply as "Quattrocento", which means as much as 15th century. The German-speaking world, on the other hand, reached the early Renaissance a little later, around 1520, where it lasted only a little more than 30 years and produced fewer famous artists and works than in Italy.

The early Renaissance is characterized in its representations mainly by beginning to turn away from religious representations and motifs, as they were still common in the Gothic period. Instead, there was a return to the themes of antiquity as well as contemporary secular themes. In addition, the technique of central perspective is characteristic of the early Renaissance, invented by the architects Filippo Brunelleschi and Leon Battista Alberti. Painters such as Paolo Uccello also dealt with questions of perspective in scientific studies and continued to develop it further. In addition to Uccello, Sandro Botticelli and Giovanni Bellini are among the most famous painters of the early Renaissance. Botticelli's painting "The Birth of Venus" is in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence and is probably one of the most famous paintings in Europe.
