A house can not really be seen in the painting by the French impressionist Claude Monet (1840-1926). On the contrary, the observer can immerse himself in a sea of colors, which in parts dispenses with any representational imagery. However, this renunciation may well be described as profit, because this image is almost sparkling in its finely composed color. If you draw an imaginary line from the lower left corner to the upper left corner - the picture has a nearly square format - the right upper triangle forms the more objective part, whereas the lower left part is dominated by the pure play of colors. A house is nowhere to be seen, dominated by the pure color of nature. Rough brushstrokes dominate the painting, the color palette ranges from the dark green of the leaves to almost white spots in the middle of the picture. Light and shadow are indistinguishable, and the picture lacks almost any depth effect. But here, too, is true that the alleged loss as a gain, because the viewer's attention is directed entirely to the rich variety of colors. Undoubtedly a garden landscape can be seen, and yet the path to pure abstraction is clearly recognizable in this picture.
